PepsiCo, based in Leicester in the United Kingdom, own numerous brands in addition to the well known Pepsi drink including Walkers Crisps, Quaker Oats, Tropicana and 7UP.
Weiss Technik UK installed a Weiss WK3 1000/40 Temperature and Climatic Test Chamber at PepsiCo for the testing of crisp products.
The chamber is loaded with packets of crisps, such as Doritos, within their outer packaging (cardboard boxes). Temperature and humidity levels are ramped up and down to simulate conditions experienced during warehouse storage, transportation and storage by the end user. The aim of the test is to see if the crisps have gone soft at the end of the test and to assess whether there has been any ingress of moisture into the packets.
The unit supplied is a standard model except for the feet. It is stipulated that items within areas of food have to be raised by a minimum of 150mm from the floor to enable the sweeping and cleaning of the floor. The WK3 1000/40 supplied to PepsiCo has special raised feet of 180mm in order to meet the requirements. The chamber replaces an old Fisons chamber.
Key specifications of the WK3 1000/40 chamber include:
- Chamber capacity of 990 litre
- Temperature range for temperature tests from -45°C to +180°C
- Temperature range for climatic tests from +10°C to +95°C
- Temperature changing rate cooling at 3K/min
- Temperature changing rate heating at 4K/min
- Humidity range from 10%RH to 98%RH
The chamber also features a 12” colour touch panel to facilitate convenient and easy operation, monitoring and documentation.
